Springing Forward, Slowing Down

Springing Forward, Slowing Down

Mid May. The world is doing its usual thing: trees are leafy, flowers are showing off like divas on a stage, birds are auditioning for the role of “most persistent early-morning alarm,” and somewhere a squirrel is plotting global domination.

And here we are, caught between two very human things: wanting to sprint forward with the season and feeling like we might actually need a nap first.

Can we pause and admire the daisies first?

It’s a peculiar tension. The world is full of growth, energy, and opportunity, and our own energy is sometimes… not. Sometimes it’s wobbling, sneaky, reluctant, or quietly asking: “Can we pause and admire the daisies first?”

The Art of Seasonal Alignment

There’s something quietly radical about noticing your own rhythm in a world that’s bursting with external cues:

  • Spring says: “Grow! Blossom! Hustle!”
  • You might say: “Maybe… let me just sip this tea and watch a bee flounder dramatically in the birdbath first.”

And that’s okay. Really. Nature doesn’t measure its growth against anyone else’s schedule, so why should we?

This May, let’s take a moment to notice where our own growth and energy actually are. Not where society or Instagram tells us it should be. Not where the calendar insists we should be. But where you are, right now, with all your messy, beautiful human rhythms.

Gentle Reflections for May

Here’s what you might notice if you lean in a little:

  • How your energy ebbs and flows with the changing light
  • What’s sprouting in your mind that might need attention or might need just to be admired quietly
  • Small joys around you: a flower in bloom, a cool breeze, the sound of a neighbour mowing the lawn at an unholy hour
Sometimes these tiny observations are more grounding

Sometimes these tiny observations are more grounding than all the productivity tips in the world. (Especially when that productivity tip involves moving a cactus from one shelf to another, I see you.)

A Cheeky Gentle Exercise

  1. Step outside (or lean out the window if the weather is tricky).
  2. Take a slow, deliberate breath. Notice: Is the world loud, gentle, chaotic, beautiful?
  3. Observe something you wouldn’t normally notice. A leaf, a bug, a cloud that looks suspiciously like a celebrity you haven’t liked in years.
  4. Reflect: how does this small observation affect your energy or your day?

Optional: make a note in a journal, a napkin, or even on the back of a grocery receipt. No one needs to see it but you.

Let’s Make It Interactive

  • What small signs of May are catching your attention right now?
  • Have you noticed a rhythm or pause in your own life that’s oddly in sync with the season?
  • Is there something growing in your mind, heart, or garden that you’ve been ignoring?

Reply in comments or via Ask for a Reflection:

  • Free option: a short, thoughtful written response just to get human attention
  • Pay-what-fits: a deeper reflection tailored to your note with care and maybe a cheeky nudge

All responses are gentle. None is advice. Just someone quietly sitting with your observation.

Parting Thoughts

May is a reminder: life moves fast, but it also pauses, blooms, and hesitates. You don’t need to sprint with it all the time. Sometimes, standing still, noticing the growth around you, and giving yourself permission to slow down is exactly the brave thing to do.

So today… maybe step outside, notice a leaf, wave at a bee (politely), sip that tea, and let the season remind you that slowing down isn’t failing, it’s participating in life, in your own perfectly human rhythm.

Oh, you know… keeping up with nature’s drama. Someone has to

And if anyone asks what you were doing? Just shrug: “Oh, you know… keeping up with nature’s drama. Someone has to.”
